Once upon a time, Native Americans of the plains tribes survived on the Buffalo. They used the whole animal, from snout to tail, hoof to horn. Then? The White Man came, and to destroy the native population, the white man slaughtered the buffalo, leaving their bodies to rot in the sun until they were, literally, nearly extinct. As were the Native Americans.
The few that were left were pushed onto reservations. Food was brutally scarce, shelter and warmth nearly nonexistent. White men’s leftovers, including ‘trade cloth’, were the only things available. You certainly can’t grow food in the middle of the desert, and you can’t build homes from sand.
The Plains tribes, especially the Lakota, began making Star Quilts, variously known as Lone Star, Mathematical, and many other names across the world. Made from trade cloth, feed bags, any sort of cloth that became available, the quilts were made for warmth, but also as trade goods. Their most important function, however, was to be given as gifts. Weddings, births, deaths. They are an integral part of Native American culture, handed down through the ages.
I have made classic Lone Stars before, and they followed the tradition, becoming gifts. I lost my photos long ago in a computer crash (I made them a good 12-15 years ago) but I have always considered the Lone Star one of my absolute favorites, for its history, beauty, and complexity.
The history continues. So, when I wanted to make a gift for a friend/editing client who is Native, and lives in Montana, I decided I wanted to do something a bit diffrent that still links back to history.
So, I took the basic drawing idea:
But I wanted to make a quilt I have always adored – a Broken Star.
To bring in my own personality, I worked in Batiks. To honor my friend’s writing, I added these drawings:

I usually don’t do quilt kits (you get the pattern and all fabrics to make the quilt as pictured, that sort of thing) but for this one I am giving it real consideration. How beautiful is this? So sunshiny and happy! It is by 4th & 6th Designs.
Barbara and Mary are sisters (born 4th & 6th in their family) who are award winning quilt artists. I would love to get my act together enough to design enough beautiful patterns (and maybe do kits, but you have to buy fabric by the bolt for that… of course, maybe I could do it strictly with my and dyes…hum… there is a thought!) and run a company like theirs!
Golden Quilt Company is doing the kit out of their store, and I find myself going in just to stand and stare at it – LOL! Of course, I have to watch it – because every time I go in, I find something I want. (Sigh)
Anyway, I just wanted to share my newest obsession with you. 😉
This is STUNNING… it is the man who quilts in Cairo. These are absolutely breathtaking!

I have several pieces of “large-scale” fabric I want to use, but I don’t want to chop it into small pieces and lose the overall pattern. My Creativity Muse has apparently been out on vacation in the Bahamas (Lucky Bitch!) so I have been going it alone for more than a month. In total frustration, I started pulling out all my quilt books (Avalanche!!! RUNNNN!!!!) as well as cruising the Jefferson County Public Library for new ones (I truly LOVE libraries!)
Between my old and the ones from the library, I got my creative muse working again (take that, you vacationing harpy!) Since I had them all on my desk, here are reviews of the ones I narrowed down my creative button pushing to. None of the patterns will be copied verbatim, but they gave me the mental wherewithal to pull out my pencils and get to work!
Here’s the deal – Kaffe Fassett is the King of Color. Without a doubt, his grasp of color and design is amazing – almost overwhelmingly so. And honestly, the reason I pick up his books is for that – but also for the great beauty of the books themselves. In this one Kaffe uses his own fabrics and quilts, and it features fabrics by Phillip Jacobs and Brandon Mably as well. Of course, the same “by the time the book prints the fabrics are out of print” sort of thing happens – but unlike other designers, Kaffe’s seem to stick around longer. I am very VERY fortunate to have a LQS that has a whole back room dedicated to
Kaffe, and I couldn’t be happier. I don’t use them exclusively by any means – but sometimes the “POP” of a Kaffe is just what a quilt needs to make it magnificent.
This book was photographed in the Cornish estate of Port Eliot, the home of Lord and Lady St Germans, and the landscape is nearly as gorgeous as the quilts! This would be a perfect coffee table book, even if you don’t quilt but love magnificent photography. Amazing.
The patterns themselves are fairly simple – all the better to show off Kaffe’s amazing floral prints. This is a Terrific book for large scale prints! I especially like “espania” with its blend of stripes, florals and feathers! “Misty Log Cabin” is a simple log cabin block quilt utilizing lovely pastels and greys give a stunning colorwash effect. “Double Diamond” is another that truly appealed to me with its simple design. A common quilt raised to excellence by the use of color and amazing fabrics.
There are twenty patterns, all simple, but all stunning. My overall favorite, besides “espania” is “Meadow Pathway” – simple 60 degree triangles turned into something amazing! I think the “Arcadia” would be amazing with this quilt!
COLOR!!! Color color color color. . . . I LOVES ME SOME COLOR! And Rebecca doesn’t disappoint. These truly are ‘rainbow’ quilts, from “Wavelength” – the cover quilt – to “Huckleberry”, a take on the old fashioned hexagon quilt taken to a modern, prism level. Hexagons pieced into diamonds, groups of four pieced into larger diamonds. What makes it particularly stunning is the use of medium, light and dark values for a true prism effect. Awesome. The best part for people who like quilting more than piecing? The amazing field for showing off AMAZING quilting. The quilting of the one on the cover is a knockout!
My favorite, though? “Lucy in the Sky” uses black and white, and white and black, polka dot fabric in a traditional Ohio Star block with paper-pieced rainbow squares on point. Drool drool…. Yep, that one is going in my stack with my hand dyed fabrics and my whole BOX of black and white fabrics!
Have you ever drooled over a book for a single quilt that just called your name? That is “Adding Layers” for me. Well, two quilts really. “Lily Fields” is a simple Carolina Lily – but so much more! A medallion lily is surrounded by a multiple lilies in graduated sizes, banded with gorgeous greens. Stunning, and drool worthy.
Again, by using simpler patterns in new ways, Kathy shows off many of the absolutely amazing fabrics available to quilters today. And as we all know – there are a million of them. My second favorite? “Ikat Diamonds” shows off the new (and ancient) middle eastern weave and colour of Ikat fabrics and shot cottons in simple diamonds surrounded by sawtooth borders. For something so simple, the results are breathtaking.
There aren’t a lot of “this is how you quilt” instructions, which is all to the better in my mind. Instead, she spends a bit of time on rulers (believe me, I couldn’t live without my rulers!) then gets right into the quilts. If you are looking for ideas for large scale prints, this is another great book. There are simple patterns for someone who wants a “this is how you do it step-by-step” quilting book, but it also gives a wonderful overview of using color and design to turn something simple into something spectacular.
Big-Print Quilts is another ‘hit-or-miss’ book. “Grand Daddy” is the one quilt in the book that made me go “Ooh” – the rest? Not so much. Grand Daddy is a simple sawtooth star quilt that utilizes a large poppy floral against a cream and black background that allows the fabrics to come out and lay. The rest are, well, muddy. The author seems to write very simple quilt books, based on fat quarters, which in their place are marvelous. This one, however, feels like overreaching. The quilts could have been stunning, but wind up looking more like a muddy mess. Either the fabric overwhelms the design, or the design the fabric. No matter, I wouldn’t spend the money for it, other than forthe one quilt – and I have patterns galore for sawtooth stars, so I wouldn’t recommend it unless you see more than one quilt that you feel you could choose better fabrics for and want to spend the money. “Hercules” could be beautiful given better fabrics, as could “Big Sky”. I was tempted to give this a 2-star review. Why? Well, first it is $18.99 for a 34 page booklet. Uh. No. Library works!
“Zen Dahlia” is what turned me on to Pat Ferguson’s work. A large, whole cloth quilt, the work is absolutely amazing. So, I decided to look her up. Now, this is not a “quilting book” per se. Yes, there are directions for how to make a quilt out of your black-
and-white drawings. And her work is really beautiful. But this is, first and foremost, a drawing manual. A good enough one, based on continuous line drawing for quilting, but it is all about drawing. If that interests you, check it out at the library before spending this much money on it. I have a lot of time spent doodling – if you don’t this will help you learn how.
Only 48 pages long, this isn’t a huge book, but it IS huge on helping you start your thought process on how to work with large print fabrics. I bought this several years ago, and just made a quilt for my bed based upon the book at the end of last year.
A sweet little investment for my quilting library. I bought mine new, but you can get the Kindle for $9.59 or a used paperback for as little as 3 bucks (but do Judy a favour and buy the $13.66 paperback. It’s worth it for quick and easy quilts for you, or for gifts!)
I got Judy’s 9-Patch Pizzazz: Fast, Fun & Finished in a Day after seeing it in my LQS. It had some fun, simple patterns in it, with ideas for using those ideas to create other quilts based on the basic idea. To be honest, I am a long-time quilter, with a depth of experience, and have designed quilts myself for many years. However, I have a stash of large prints that I had not been able to come up with any ideas for, and was frustrated. My work usually is based on applique, and I wanted something quick and easy, so 9-Patch Pizzazz: Fast, Fun & Finished in a Day was an investment in ‘what to do when I have quilter’s block and just want to make something fun’.
This book doesn’t have it same feel as the first one. It feels more rushed, and less like something she enjoyed writing, as compared to the first one. It wasn’t as creative, and her fabric choices were less than stellar. It isn’t bad, but not up to her capabilities. It felt more “rush rush to get it to the printer” than anything else. Meh.
OK, I hate to give bad reviews – but Maverick Quilts does not deliver what it promises. Most of the book is “how to quilt” rather than what it advertises, which is creative methods to utilize those wonderful large-scale prints.
I have several large-scale prints that are absolutely amazing, and to cut them up into tiny pieces is less than optimal to be able to truly enjoy how gorgeous they are. So, I went book shopping. There are a few out there that are truly gorgeous, and embrace the concept of showing off your prints. This one, not so much. The author uses large scale prints mostly for borders and plain square or rectangular blocks interspersed with very simple stripped blocks cut apart and resewn into stripped or Drunkard’s Path squares. The fabrics are “mushed together” ala Kaffe, but without the punch and pizzazz he gives his quilts.
“Fly By the Garden” is simply rectangles of various large scale florals with a large border of the same fabrics sewn together into various sized squares and rectangles.
“California Housetops” cuts the fabric into stripes and strips, and while somewhat keeping the fabric in it’s whole cloth glory, it then chops it up between simple 2″ strips sewn into blocks, causing ‘breaks’ in the pattern that cause a schism in the overall flow of the pattern. “jalousie” is a takeoff on Judy Sisneros’ “Rectangle Pizzazz: Fast, Fun & Finished in a Day”, but Judy does it better. The one quilt I did enjoy is one I have made before from other books. She calls it “Superstars” and it uses an 8-point star, a four, six and nine-patch block, a quarter-square and a paired quarter-square. It is a very simple layout, and quite a common quilt, but utilizing larger scale prints. The main blocks are 6 1/2″ by 6 1/2″, so it doesn’t really give you a lot of room to fit “larger” print fabrics. But still, her use of prairie points at the edges of the ‘focus’ blocks is innovative.
Overall? There are a lot of better books out there. Such as the next book on my list!

There are some gorgeous quilt photos of some really stunning quilts.
There are several block ideas in the back, along with finished block sizes.
The book utilizes very simple blocks – Twist, Snowball, Birds in the Air and Rail Fence. There is a short and sweet instructional with drawings on how to make easy-peasy half-square triangles.
80 pages. $21.77. Urp. I have given up on buying these tiny books for that much money. Can’t do it. So, Library it is.
I am a sucker for large format print fabrics – oriental, floral, you name it, I have a stash full of it! What a pleasure to find a sweet little book to kick-start my brain on what to do with all this beautiful fabric without having to cut it into tiny pieces.
I first met Jan Krentz several years ago at the Sisters, Oregon Quilt Festival. If you haven’t been? You GOTTA go!!! She taught a class from this book on Lone Star Quilts from this book. (My copy is signed – Yea!) She was a wonderful instructor. And the best thing? The teachings in her class follow the book in the same sort of well-laid-out, thoughtful, clear language that makes this sometimes hard-as-heck quilt to make almost easy-peasy-eggs-and-cheesy!
The layouts are creative, the instructions clear, and the finished quilts stunning. Of course, I did a silly and changed sewing machines mid-stream (duh…) and had to take my corners off . . . (not to quilters – do NOT change your machine without measuring to see if the 1/4″ foot from one to the other is the SAME quarter inch! Some are off a thread or two, and it really adds up.)

If you want to make your first, or fiftieth, lone star, I can’t recommend this book highly enough!
OK, here is my sad little secret. I really, really want to bead my quilts. I have buckets of beads that I have purchased for them. The thing is – they always end up looking just, well, goofy. But here? Here is a wonderful book that will help me with that very (to me) difficult chore! There are very clear, precise instructions (goodie!) about how to and why. I never knew that you should stretch your thread before beading – it keeps the beads from sagging off the quilt!
There are beautiful drawings on how to knot your thread, on the four basic beading styles, and how to make picot edges. But what I like best? The photos! They are, in a word, stunning. My creative juices are definitely flowing now!
First, this is not your “typical” Lone Star Quilt book. The points in these beauties are cut from those ‘hardest-of-all-to-use” large scale prints. Yippee! As Shirley says – “All the WOW Without the Work!”
I couldn’t agree more. Lone Stars can be, in a word, tedious as heck. Even using quick piecing methods, lone stars can be completely frustrating – and you can end up with a ‘quilt’ that is shaped more like a bowl than anything else! This one allows you to pull out your favorite large scale prints and fussy-cut your way to something completely new, in eight fussy-cut pieces. Shirley gives you a very simple formula to make the quilt whatever size you want, whether to fit a particular use, or to work with the particular fabric you want to show off. It is AMAZING what you end up with depending on not only the fabric, but by simply moving your template around to hit different portions of the fabric! (My favorite of the whole book? “On the Prowl” – Tigers and Dragons!) You could literally make one of these a week and keep going for years, never having any one quilt turn out the same.
Very nice. Very clear instructions. Well worth checking out. Copyright 2005, so it should be easily available. For those who want to make the more typical Lone Star, I would highly recommend Jan Krentz: “Lone Star Quilts & Beyond: Step-by-Step Projects and Inspiration.” I love that one. Very clear, very precise, with amazing results.

These are secondary fabrics you may or may not use, but are recommended.
Here is my sketch for the quilt. Yes, it is very rough, but I got excited when I saw the fabrics! The top part is an old-fashioned “Dahlia” pieced pattern. The lower part is all applique. It pulls the modern feel of today’s hand-painted and dyed quilts, such as the “Best First Time Entry Applique” (see below) (that face painting is amazing). The top part is the original pieced pattern from approximately 1840.
Now I can hardly WAIT for the fabric to become available so I can Start!
This quilt is my 2009 Hoffman Challenge Mixed Media runner-up. It traveled all over the United States. It then went on to be juried into the Quilt Colorado Quilt Show to quite a bit of viewer acclaim. The judges thought my animals were too obvious – well, it IS called “Which is More Beautiful, The Scenery or the Wildlife?” To me, both are breathtaking, and neither overshadows the other. That little cottage down in the left hand corner is everyone’s dream cottage in the mountains.
I remember when it happened. In 1971 The Whitney Museum of American Art did something that sat the “Art World” on its ear. They displayed quilts in a museum setting: Abstract Design in American Quilts “bestowed institutional recognition of the artistry inherent in these humble textiles.”
Quilts have existed, literally, throughout history. While they are made from fabric, and therefore examples are hard to find before Roman times, scraps from that period have been found in digs. The Middle Ages hold many examples of quilted fabrics being used under the metal armor used by knights to shield their bodies from sharp edges and protect them from blows against the metal.
As a child, I remember quilts in wedding chests and on beds in country homes. They were often cherished and handed down by families. I also remember seeing exquisitely hand stitched quilts thrown in the trunks of cars by uncaring family members, and used under cars for changing oil. Quilts often, literally, “got no respect.”
I remember my first quilt show, at the local county fair. I worked for hours on end to stitch a Bargello quilt in all shades of reds. I very carefully chose all my fabrics, carefully matching thread colours to blend, not only to my top but to the floral background I oh-so-very-carefully chose to go with the top. I was soooo proud of that quilt!
Imagine my dismay when the judge, an elderly woman with a tight, lemon-pucker face, said, “You know, you could have won, if you hand just used the proper thread. Quilts are always quilted with WHITE thread!” As I looked at my much loved quilt, I gave up in tears. White thread?!?! All you would see would be the thread!! It would totally take away from my quilt! I gave my quilt away, and didn’t quilt again for years.
Things have changed since then. Quilts ARE Art! And isn’t it wonderful? What used to be three layers of fabric (COTTON ONLY!!) batting (COTTON ONLY) and fabric (COTTON ONLY) bound together by thread (WHITE cotton only) to be shown only at the county fair, if you showed them at all, have now become magnificent art forms. And Art Quilts of the Midwest Linzee Kull McCray showcases the works of many of the premiere quilt artists of today. As a writer covering textiles, art, and craft, Linzee Kull McCray wondered just how deeply fiber artists were influenced by their surroundings. Focusing on midwestern art quilters in particular, she put out a call for entries and nearly 100 artists responded; they were free to define those aspects of midwesterness that most affected their work. Just as with any other art form, these artists are influenced by their surroundings, their time period, and their materials, much like the quilters of Gees Bend, Alabama were influenced by theirs. From the functional to the fantastic these 100
artists work in fiber, certainly, but how they handle their materials is wide-ranging and exciting. All sorts of fibers are used – but how it is handled is deeply based in the idea of quilt as art. From new ways to utilize symmetry and repetition to new forms of dying, painting, uses of three dimensional forms and uses of non-fiber materials such as metals and jewels, the old has become new again, while still hearkening back to its historical roots, philosophy and culture.
If you are interested in art as a whole, or in quilts in particular, this is a beautiful book to add to your collection, whether as a coffee table book to browse at your leisure over a cup of tea, a fount of ideas for your own quilt, or a paean to beauty, this is a gorgeous book to add to your library.
