Tomorrow Is Thanksgiving – Time To Change It To “Thinksgiving”?

Mohammed Zeyara posted this on Facebook this morning. First, you must realize I have no real idea who this person is, he is simply someone who wound up on my ‘following you’ list. Huh. A guy with over a million followers is following me-how cool is that?

The forced removal of the Cherokee Nation took them 1,000 miles west to Oklahoma, but along the way thousands died from starvation, disease or freezing to death during the winter months of the forced removal. Some estimates say that 55% of the Cherokee Nation died as a direct result of the Trail of Tears. (A Little Matter of Genocide, Churchill)

Anyway, I was reading this, and it really hit home for me. My family on my mother’s side was Quapaw, a Native American Tribe. They were part of the “Great Removal” – the Cherokee Trail of Tears, (other tribes, including Choctaw and Quapaw were gathered up at the same time) carried out by the White Man, shoving us off our lands and into the barrens of Oklahoma onto “Reservations” (think the Japanese Prison Camps in the US during the World Wars).

I always think of this when “Thanksgiving” comes around. Needless to say, I am not a big fan of the holiday. Then I think of all the other atrocities in the world . . .

So, I wrote the following and posted it on Facebook. I think the concept is important enough that I am asking you to read it here. And maybe you will think about meeting my challenge?

A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history. – Mahatma Gandhi

Humans are, at base, savage beasts made more savage by their intellect – their ability to plan violence for reasons that have nothing to do with feeding their young or guarding their homes. They do it for power, glory, and wealth. Things a true “savage beast” would never consider. Animals kill for food and for the safety of their young and their family groups. Humans do it because they can.

At one time or another every human “group” – Native American, African, Catholic, Jew, Christian, Hispanic, Celtic, you name it, have all been the ‘target’ of the rest of the world. Oh, and must I mention gays, lesbians, and women? As long as humans are determined to make themselves “better” than other humans, for ANY REASON we won’t evolve beyond savages, no matter how much “better” we put ourselves forward as being than anyone else.

Here is just one example that brings me immense pain. “White Pride” groups tell Hispanics that they should get out of “Their” country – and yet, this was Hispanic/Native American land long before the white armies came in and overran their country. If White groups want everyone “other” to go home, shouldn’t they load up the boats and go back to Europe? This is simply an example, not a rant, just a point – – – NO ONE  is without guilt, and NOTHING in this world will become better until we all decide to look beyond skin colour, religion, sex, race, and all those other “reasons” for fomenting hatred.

Maybe, for this Holiday season, everyone should consider meeting a person they most fear, whether because of their skin colour, race, sexual orientation, whatever, I don’t care. And I encourage you to sit down with them over a cup of tea and really get to know the PERSON. Are you brave enough to do that? To face your fears and prejudices, to reach out with your mind and heart and learn? You may be surprised to learn just how similar you are….I have no great love for Christians, for many, many reasons, but that doesn’t keep me from considering a local minister a dear friend. We share a love of gardening, of food and books and many other things that have nothing to do with her religion and everything to do with her being a genuinely good person. I cherish the things we share, and honour the things we don’t. Maybe, one person at a time, we can learn to accept our differences?

He’ll have to turn up the heat in order to melt her heart…

Logan Slade made the biggest mistake of his life eight years ago when he left his high school sweetheart at the altar and reported to the military. Now he’s returned home and ready to do whatever it takes to win her back. But Trixie Frost isn’t the same starry-eyed girl who believed he could do no wrong. Now she’s stronger, independent, and more fascinating than any other woman he’s ever met.

Trixie has spent the last eight years trying to forget Logan while devoting her life to the quirky town of North Pole, Alaska. She’s in a good place, dating a nice man and ready to take the next step in their relationship until Logan walks into her bar and turns her life upside down again.

This sexy, determined, military version of Logan is a bigger threat to her than the boy she’d loved to distraction. She can’t let him chip away at the protective wall of ice erected around her heart. Because there’s no way she’ll be able to put the pieces back a second time.

“I don’t want you here,” Trixie said.

“Too bad,” Logan said. “I’m not leaving.”

“Why are you so adamant about that? I know you, Logan. You leave, remember? It’s what you’re good at.”

“Once. I left once. I’m not leaving again.”

“Your ‘once’ was eight years long.”

“I know. It took me a while to understand what I really wanted. You are what I want.”

“Well, you can’t have me. I’m not available.”

A chill slid over him. “You married to someone else?”

“I don’t have to be with someone to be unavailable,” she finished.

Mysteries a la Mode
Pet Boutique Mysteries (as Annie Knox)

Rilee Dust isn’t your typical wood carver, she’s young and making a go of it in the small village of Tickle Creek, Oregon. She’s also the only one in town who isn’t determined to get rid of her strip club neighbor. Everyone else, however, is ready to evict the Girls, Girls, Girls.

When a dog adopts her and turns her life upside down, Rilee’s not so sure it’s a good thing. Especially when he leads her to a moose, a military man and a dead body. Because the moose kicked her butt, the man saved her life and the dead body is one of her customers.

Now Rilee’s smack dab in the middle of all the small town politics with a killer on the loose who has an ax to grind. And Rilee just may be the next victim to have her name carved in stone.

“Bogart!” I yelled, frantically circling and trying to locate the direction of his cries. “Bogart…Heeere!” Catching a glimpse of movement to my right I ran toward the commotion.

An eighty pound black and brown Boxer flew through the air in my direction. Ears cutting through the wind, his eyes looked crazed and his jowls flapped as he cried out in fear. The cause of his flight … an eight hundred pound Moose who was pissed off and raising cane. Or in this case raising Bogart with her nose. He landed on his feet — like a colt trying to stand for the first time — legs splitting, chest smacking the earthen floor.

None of that stopped his feet from moving. Bogart was back in the race of his life as the irate cow charged after him.

“Oh, crap.” My stomach dropped as I realized she wasn’t done with her assault, and I was the much larger target as Bogart led her straight to me. I turned and ran, with Bogart hot on my heels. The sound of the cow’s breath filled my head. The distance closed between us. Zigzagging through the trees, I couldn’t outrun her. Nor could I out-maneuver her. I just hoped she’d get tired and realized we weren’t a threat.

Unfortunately, she didn’t feel the same way.

Three career paths resonated for Kym during her early childhood: a detective, an investigative reporter, and…a nun. Being a nun, however, dropped by the wayside when she became aware of boys—they were the spice of life she couldn’t deny.

In high school her path was forged when she took her first job at a dry cleaners and met every cop in town, especially the lone female police officer in patrol. From that point on there was no stopping Kym’s pursuit of a career in law enforcement—even if she had to duct tape rolls of coins to her waist to meet the weight requirements to be hired.

Kym followed her dream and became a detective that fulfilled her desire to be an investigative reporter, with one extra perk—a badge. Promoted to sergeant Kym spent the majority of her career in SVU. She retired from the job reluctantly when her husband drug her kicking and screaming to another state, but writing continued to call her name, at least in her head.

I just un-liked your author page on Facebook | Greta van der Rol

As you probably know, I am a big fan and follower of the works of Greta van der Rol, especially her Tiger series. As such, I nearly fell out of my chair this morning when I got the following from Greta:

Then, of course, I took a deep breath and read the whole article. Ms. Greta makes an exceptional point. Is it really worth it to try to advertise on Facebook any longer?

So. What do you think? Is Facebook on the way out? And should Google limit what links you should see? In my mind, tailoring, or filtering your information limits your knowledge, and that is always a bad thing. . . .

UPDATE!!! CHECK OUT STAR TREK: RENEGADES!!!

Socialjazzdude over at Amazon posted the following information, which had me jumping up and down and giggling like a six-year-old:

While disregarding the abomination of JJ Abram’s films, Star Trek’s Walter Koenig (Chekov, TOS), as well as Star Trek Voyager’s Tim Russ (Tuvok, ST Voyager) and Robert Picardo (The doctor,ST Voyager) , are currently in the process of creating a pilot for a new soon to released Star Trek television pilot, ST Renegades. It takes place in the original timeline/universe and is set several years after Voyager’s return to the Alpha quadrant. It also will introduce new characters including a descendant of Khan. Please take a moment to check out their website, official Facebook page, and both trailers on Youtube. Unlike Abrams and Orci; Koenig, Picardo, and Russ are people who know and get Star Trek. This pilot is currently on schedule to be pitched to CBS in the fall 2014. Check it out and LLAP! “

Of course, as a huge Star Trek fan, I checked it out, and so should you!

Review: Delectable: Big Sky Pie #1 by Adrianne Lee

delectableDelectable by Adrianne Lee has great potential when one reads the description. A man goes away for a month, fishing. While he is away his mother sets up a pie shop in what used to be his office. Sounds cute.
What actually occurs is much less than cute. When his father passes away, Quint, a real estate agent, throws a tantrum and runs away for a month, fishing in Alaska, leaving his mother to handle her grief on her own, while pretty much advising his wife she is too much trouble to bother with.

Apparently, this is not new behaviour for him. Throughout the book Quint is spoiled, self-centered, self absorbed, thoughtless, smug, and generally acts like a 12 year old having a temper fit. A 12 year old who is afraid that all his boys will think he is a sissy if he can bake a pie.

Overall? An extremely poor take on what should have been a cute story. I wanted to slap the `heroine’ more than I wanted to keep reading about her. Both of them deserved one another – even after two years of being treated like nothing more than an annoyance, she still is more interested in playing `match-the-hoohaws’ than understanding that the problems with the self-centered egotist with the `macho stupid’ attitude will never go away. She might give him his way and get back together with him for a while – but as he sets up yet another fishing trip right in the middle of an event that will spell the making or breaking of his mother’s new business – don’t get your hopes up there, girlie.

Not recommended.

This book was provided to me for an honest review.

Note: I posted this review to Amazon for the publisher and found that I got 0 of 10 Likes. The thing is, nobody would say WHY they didn’t like the review. Which leads me to wonder if the author set this up, or what? LOL

If you don’t like something I say, let me know why. I would give you the same consideration!
