Playing With Fire: A Magical Romantic Comedy (With A Body Count) – R.J. Blain

“Warning: This novel contains excessive humor, action, excitement, adventure, magic, romance, and bodies. Proceed with caution.” — R.J. Blain — Playing With Fire: A Magical Romantic Comedy (With A Body Count)

OK, Really? Who could possibly bypass that sort of intro? Of course, I am a HUGE R.J. Blain fan, so pretty much anything she writes I read. The Balancing the Scales series and the Witch and Wolf series are personal favorites, both Urban Fantasy and both marvelous. She also writes a wide range of other tales, from Magical Apocalyptic to Sci-Fi and, yes, Pack tales.  Oh, and don’t forget immortal pirates! Something for all.

Playing With Fire is something different again – and once more her wit, creativity, and the ability to craft a tale well outside the common is a winner. Baily Gardner is not your common-and-garden barista – not when she spikes your java with pixie dust on request. Of course, spiking drinks all day is often much more pleasant than her other job. You know, the one that requires cleaning up the world’s nastiest magical substances. I mean, come on! Who would voluntarily clean up gorgon vomit? And for “a cute little pittance” no less. Sigh.

I refuse to say more. You have GOT to read this yourself! But be careful about drinking or eating while you are reading. You might just wind up with your drink sprayed all over your tablet.

Just sayin’.

Highly Recommended!  Ms. Blain says she is bringing out at least two follow-ups (hopefully this year!) and I can hardly WAIT!

Never Mind the Princess! Save the Dragon! A Michael Angel Short Story

21314850By now you are surely familiar with Michael Angel’s Fantasy and Forensics series that I am so enamored of. But did you know Michael is quite the comedian as well?

Never Mind the Princess, Save the Dragon! is a comedic fairy tale just right for when you want a giggle and have a few minutes to spare. Only 64 pages, there is no sex, little violence, but a great deal of snorting laughter!

I don’t want to give a lot away, but picture this. A Polish Knight. A spoiled little girl slash young woman. Add in a greedy king and a sweet little dragon, and what you get is a hoot. Grab it for $.99, or get it free on Kindle Unlimited, but Sir Maximilian Maselniczka is well worth the read!

Review: Hedging His Bets – Celia Kyle & Mina Carter

Hedging His BetsIt’s tough being a big, tough, scary shifter – when you change into a hedgehog weighing about a pound. Oy. How embarrassing! Especially when you are totally addicted to Honey, an Amazonian honey-blond with attitude to spare. But when Blake finds out that Honey adores Hedgies, he decides he will play the ‘poor little hedgehog’ and get himself into Honeys arms that way. What could go wrong?

Um…. well, let’s see. You come into her home playing a role . . .

What happens next is funny, sad, and a lighthearted look at just how dumb men can be when they are determined to get what they want! This is a light-hearted story, just what we expect from the team of Celia Kyle and Mina Carter. Lots of humour, quirky characters, and of course, an HEA. Not brain surgery, but lots of fun.

Rain, Weaving and a new Quick and Furry

I have been in a reading slump. Pick it up, put it down, pick it up, sigh, put it down again. So, I have been weaving and really enjoying it. Since it has been raining so much I haven’t done much gardening, but I finally got out today and wrestled the lawnmower through the knee high grass…. Ouch.

I laid in the tub for a couple hours after that, and enjoyed the newest Celia Kyle/Mina Carter “Quick and Furry” – number five of the series. Hey, quick is good, though I did have to refill the tub before I finished. Ah, the benefits of hot water and Epsom salts! And I actually read without putting it down, so kudos to finally getting back to reading. Maybe tomorrow I can get back to my normal reading schedule (already in progress)… and if you aren’t old enough to remember that, well, that just shows how old I really am. Sigh. Anyway, my review for Wanting A Mate: Quick and Furry #5:

Wanting a Mate (Quick & Furry, #5)Giggle time! Celia and Mina’s fifth in the “Quick and Furry” series was just what I needed to snuggle into tonight. Giggles and grins with a side of yummy.

“Free therapy in exchange for the willingness to be included in a study. ‘The Inherited Intricacies and Deficiencies of the Familial Mind.'” Yep. Chloe has one whack-a-doodle family – the kind that stalks you and breaks into your house when you aren’t looking. . . well, mom is an oddball, but the brothers aren’t so bad – just sorta, well, stalkerish and overprotective. But hey, things could be worse, right? Your mom could break into your house in the middle of the night to inform you she has set you up with the M&M Mating Agency, cause she really does want grandkids. Er, Grandcubs? Whatever.

Oh, yeah. That actually happened. (Facepalm)

Cougar | Wildlife Info and PhotosWhat happens next had me giggling out loud. Well, and enjoying the hottie hotness that Celia and Mina are famous for. This is one cute entry into the Quick and Furry pantheon. If you haven’t read them, why not? Funny, hot shorts sure to help you relax after a long day. So. Much. Fun!

I received this book from the authors in exchange for a realistic review. SCORE!!! 😉 (Happy Dance!)

Gardening, but here is a funny for you to enjoy Disclosure: I picked this up on Booklikes from Paul Read or Dead. I know it has been floating around out there, but it never fails to make me laugh, so I am sharing it today then going back out to work in the yard!

Review – Ready to Were: Shift Happens Series Book One

23524116“He’s her mate and he dipped his stick in several other … actually many other oil tanks. So she dumped his furry player ass, snuck away in the middle of the night and hadn’t really planned on ever going back there again.” – Dwayne

Last night was “cleanse the palette” night. After some difficult reads, with deep thought processes needed, it was time to pull up a “freebie” from an Indie author. Ground rules: the author’s first book in a series (I had thought this was actually her first book, then I got a gander at the whole NYT and USA Today Bestselling Author thing – ah well!), a ‘light’ read with a female lead, and it has to promise to have some humour.

What I came up with was Ready to Were: Shift Happens, Book One. Originally appearing in Three Southern Beaches, which I haven’t read, this novella extends a short. Essie McGee is an agent with WTF – the Werewolf Treaty Federation. Her job is, basically, to go out and kill things. Quite a bit different from her life on Hung Island, Georgia, where her main interest was her sexy Alpha Hank Wilson. That all ended when Hank couldn’t keep it in his pants – who wants to be barefoot and pregnant and at the beck and call of a player – but when Essie gets marching orders back to go back to Hung Island on a case, even though she would rather chew off her own paw, well. Hilarity happens.

Dragging her gay 300 year old Vampyre best friend along with her for moral support, Essie blows into Hung Island to all the things she left behind. Including Grandma Bobby Sue – and the dreaded Hank the Cheater. But as Dwayne says, “you’re far too beautiful to be hung up on a goober.”

There are missing women, strangers in town, and a desperate rush to find the women before it is too late. All well written, paced and plotted. But the best part? I am lying in bed with my Shih Tzu, Koda, and I laughed so hard when we met Grandma Bobby Sue that he leaped up off my stomach and started barking at whatever made his mom blow up!

laughcat I loved this book! As I said, it is free on Amazon, so grab your copy and sit back to enjoy yourself! Published November 25, 2014, I guess I will have to wait a bit for the next installment. Bummer!

It’s Winter – Eve Langlais and FUC Bring Me A Smile

OK, it’s winter. Yep. When you can’t get away to the mountains, cabin fever and darkness can be a real downer… So what do I do? Take a break from more serious reading and snuggle into HEA paranormal romance, Ghirardelli Dark Chocolate brownies, hot tea, a pile of quilts and pillows, and classical music.

Hum… what HEA this year? Well, you can’t go wrong with Eve Langlais. And her Furry United Coalition (or, yes, FUC) was my choice for spoiling myself. Wry, snarky, and ironic, Eve’s dry wit is very much on display, dragging out barks of laughter and sly giggles at unexpected moments. The perfect ‘just relax and enjoy’ reads, a set of five interlinked stories of love and unusual matings meant to be just what they are – fun and relaxing.

12356635The Furry United Coalition is a paranormal policing division, set to protect humans from the knowledge of, and attacks from, the hidden paranormal world. And FUC has a weird collection of paranormals of its own. The first unusual couple? In Bunny and the Bear Miranda is bubbly, bouncy, chatty, soft-and-cuddly bunny who makes the Energizer Bunny look like a dozy sloth. What is frowny, sleepy, grouchy attorney bear Chase to do? Especially when Miranda is kidnapped by a nasty mad scientist determined to design his own monster army. And breaking out requires bringing her saber-tooth bunny side to the fore – and a saber-tooth bunny suddenly becomes the ‘must have accessory’ for the Mastermind.

Book Two is Swan and the Bear. Chase’s brother, Mason, is a true ladies 13140136man and honeybun lover, a big playful teddy bear. But when he is assigned to protect a curvy swan, his whole world is turned upside down. Rich chocolate skin and a brilliant mind makes Jessie a rather unusual protectee for a sexy bear – especially when she turns down his sexy approach flat. Huh? Is the hot bear losing his pretty-boy mojo? Mastermind is determined to capture the brilliant computer specialist swan and Mason is just as determined to protect her. Just a warning, this second edition is filled with sudden bursts of uncontrollable laughter and snickering snorts . . .

15778159Croc and the Fox finds FUC raiding one of Mastermind’s hidden laboratories. And when cold-blooded Viktor enters the underground bunker filled with experimental subjects, subjects begging for the release of death, he finds Project X081 – and this weapons collecting warrior is thrown for a loop as he is stuck with the care of Project X081, who has never even seen the sky – that huge, blue vastness which sends her scurrying and climbing him like a tree, clinging like a limpet, and turning his whole calm, isolated life upside down. This one is my favorite of the five – two broken people finding one another – and finding that life is more than they ever expected.

ASS gets involved in the storyline this time. Yep, FUC and ASS, or17899113 Avian Soaring Society. I told you she has a wry sense of humour. Lion and the Falcon is laugh worthy, as the massively spoiled Dr. Manners, chief physician for FUC and the only son of an obsessive lioness mother finds himself partnered with a tall, sleek and violent falcon shifter with tons of attitude and no patience for a self-centered, self-indulgent male lion who is a pain in her backside – especially when she is ordered to protect his spoiled backside from escaped victims of Mastermind who are determined to take down Dr. Manners, and any other doctor who comes their way. Well, doctors did turn them into the monsters they are now. . .

Nolan’s mother Brenda is a hoot, and Clarice the falcon’s sharp edged tongue and tough attitude is a pleasure – though the privileged and hair-obsessed lion is a bit too much for me – overall, the women really make this one.

18621897Sooo sad, as The Doe and the Wolf is the last in the in the series (though I can’t help but hope she writes another…) Everett lost his job with FUC for his ‘all about me’ attitude which placed others in danger. Now the owner of The Lone Wolf Agency along with his sloth friend Tom, is asked by FUC to help track down and destroy the rest of the escaped prisoners from Masterminds vicious experiments. Injured and thrown over a cliff by a sadistic 8-foot-tall gecko, Everett is saved by one of the very victims he is determined to track down and kill for the bounty. Dawn drags him from the river and ties him to a bed in order to treat his wounds, and not be eaten by the big bad wolf. Escaping, to trek miles through the woods to the closest small town before disappearing into the woods once more, she is captured by said big, bad wolf . . . who finds himself drawn to the doe who seems so very normal to be the ferocious monster she is supposed to be. As they work together to capture the ‘not-so-normal’ gecko, Everett and Dawn suffer the wrath of Tom the sloth while Dawn desperately tries to hide the ‘monster’ that her doe has become. A chase through the forest, a sabre-tooth bunny giving birth in the woods, and a dramatic reveal of Dawn’s doe makes this edition both exciting and funny – and broke my heart when it ended, because it was the last one. Sigh. Weep.

Review: Four Weddings And A Werewolf by Kristin Miller

18464648Be leery of silence. It doesn’t mean you won the argument. Often, people are just busy reloading their guns. ― Shannon L. Alder

I write for those women who do not speak, for those who do not have a voice because they were so terrified, because we are taught to respect fear more than ourselves. We’ve been taught that silence would save us, but it won’t. – Audre Lorde

Back in early September, I was lucky enough to win a copy of Four Weddings and a Werewolf by Kristin Miller. It is book two of The Seattle Wolf Pack. As I already had the first book, Gone With The Wolf, I was tickled to no end to win the second. And it didn’t let me down.

Veronica is not exactly happy about her newest wedding planning job, seeing as how the family includes werewolves. And Veronica is not happy with werewolves. Because Veronica’s sister was viciously attacked by a werewolf, a werewolf that changed her beloved sister, the only family she has left. Now, though she sometimes sees her sister, her life will never be the same. And Veronica is certain that werewolves are, animals. Completely incapable of controlling their anger.

But now, Veronica is in danger, hunted by another of their kind. And only a werewolf may be able to save her life.

There is a lot of humor in Kristin’s series, but there is a great deal of pain as well. The pain of loss and fear, and the heart pounding fear of a mad stalker, intent on taking not your life, but your very soul.

This is a paranormal romance, sure. And a fun one at that. But Kristin does more, reaching beyond the simple to something better.

As I said, I won the book, and was tickled to do so. All thoughts are my own.
