Magic Stars by Ilona Andrews

Magic Stars (Kate Daniels, #8.5, Grey Wolf, #1)OK, I am definitely behind the curve when it comes to my favorite authors!

The Incredible team known as Ilona Andrews published a novella, Magic Stars, the first in the Grey Wolf series on December 8. I would normally jump on that bad boy before it was ever published, but I have been absent and unaccounted for lately. But I AM working on it!

Magic Stars focuses on two of my favorite characters from the Kate Daniels series, Derek and Julie. Since the end of the Kate and Curran series things have changed for Derek. He is now a lone wolf, having signed his separation contract from the Pack a half-hour after Curran. Now, he is, basically, a Gun for Hire, working with Kate and Curran, and with others. He is the Grey Wolf of the city, the one who came and found you if you f**ked up and hurt the wrong people.

And someone really f**ked up when they slaughtered Melissa and Randall Ives and their two small children in their own home.

For a rock.

Vengeance is mine sayeth Derek Gaunt, the Gray Wolf. And vengeance he will most certainly have. Not only against the five murderers, but against the new Pack members the new Beast Lord let into the Pack. Oh, boy. Are they ever in trouble!

Annnd then . . . Julie shows up. Julie, ward of Kate and Curran, and now Herald of the City. With her gypsy horse, tiny jeans shorts and double tomahawks, well, things are about to get interesting.

“That’s the Beast Lord’s Wolf.” the wolf raised his hands palms out. “And that’s the Beast Lord’s daughter. I’m out.”

Ha! Run, run, run, as fast as you can!

Julie is sixteen now, training hard, and still as gutsy as ever. You will learn things about both Julie and Derek in this first in the Grey Wolf series – Doing dance and giggling like a loon!!!!! I am so incredibly JAZZED!!!! I HIGHLY recommend this newest of the Ilona and Gordon’s work.

And I just preordered “Alphas: Origins” for delivery on April 19.SCORE!!

Lisa Shearin – Found Her In Night Shift, Now I’m A Fangirl…

Being a rabid Ilona Andrews fan I preordered Night Shift the moment it hit preorder Night Shift | [Ilona Andrews, Lisa Shearin, Nalini Singh, Milla Vane]status. I adore anthologies, and with both Nalini Singh and Ilona Andrews as listed authors, I was so excited to receive it. There were two other authors in the anthology, Lisa Shearin and Milla Vane, neither of which I had read before.

This is why authors are brilliant to be involved in Anthologies, especially when they can be involved in them with more well-known authors. I may never have heard of Lisa Shearin before, but after reading Lucky Charms I knew I had to read more of her work.

It was four in the morning. I was in a stolen bakery delivery truck that’d been nearly totaled by three gargoyles. In the truck with me were two hung-over elves, a pair of stoned leprechauns with the munchies, a naked Russian werewolf, and a hot partner, who was actually more of a bodyguard, in a race against a goblin dark mage to retrieve a leprechaun prince with a tracking chip embedded in his left ass cheek.

Six hours earlier:

“How the hell did you lose five horny leprechauns in a strip club?”

The Grendel Affair | [Lisa Shearin]What is NOT to love?!?! I immediately went out and purchased The Grendel Affair on Audible. Hey, it is narrated by Johanna Parker. The main character, Makenna Fraser, is a good-ole’ Southern girl, and Johanna’s southern voice is perfect for the character. Having first listened to Johanna in the Sookie Stackhouse Series, I follow her on Audible and give serious consideration to any books she narrates, just as I do with any books that are narrated by Renée Raudman, Khristine Hvam, Will Patton or . . . well, I have a list of narrators that I follow!

Makenna Fraser features in The Grendel Affair as well. Lucky Charms, the story in Night Shift seems to be a prologue to the SPI Files series. The second in the series, The Dragon Conspiracy (SPI Files), comes out January 27th, and I will be waiting impatiently for the Audible edition! I love the mythology of the SPI Files. A hidden paramilitary police force policing the supernaturals, which of course the human population knows nothing of. Yes, that concept has been used before, but when well done, it is the underpinning of many a truly marvelous story. In New York, just before New Year’s Eve, Grendels have been released, and are picking off both supernats and humans – leading up to what their leader intends to be a Times Square slaughter, ripping the blinders off the human population in a gory paean to carnage and chaos. It is up to the SPI to stop the Grendels (yes, just like in Beowulf) before the world is turned into a mythological nightmare. (Really, people – do you truly not understand that humans have a wee bit of an arsenal built up? Like, enough to destroy the world several times over? Sort of hard to fight a Predator missile with a Predator’s claws . . . Ah, the dreams of glory of a psychopath with a God complex.)

Makenna is a great heroine, mostly for the fact that she really isn’t a ‘heroine’ at all. Rather, she is a newspaper reporter who found herself thrust into the SPI because she is a seer – she can see underneath the veils that supernats wear to make them appear human. And her particular skill-set may be the only thing that can save the world from the planned chaos and slaughter. She is no Mary Sue – she makes mistakes, grave ones, but fumbles along the best she can under extremely difficult situations, helping and being helped by her new colleagues. Terror, sadness and guilt all hound her, but there are truly funny moments as well.

Lisa Shearin has another series, starring Raine Benares, which begins with Magic Magic Lost, Trouble Found: Raine Benares, Book 1 | [Lisa Shearin]Lost, Trouble Found: Raine Benares, Book 1. One of my Audible credits will be grabbing this one soon! It is narrated by Eileen Stevens, not Joanna, but as I haven’t listened to her work yet I am interested to hear how it works for the story line.

I purchased the books listing in this review. All thoughts are my own. If you enjoy my reviews, please “Like” them on Amazon.com and/or Audible.com. Thanks you!

It’s HERE!!!! And I Already Read The First Two Stories! NIGHT SHIFT!

21857389Wheee! Time got away from me, and I didn’t realize what day it was. Then, I opened up my Kindle. SCORE!!!! Woooo hooo!!!!

There it was. Night Shift. Night-Flippin’-Shift! Uh, do I sound a bit excited? You bet your Double Chocolate Chocolate Mocha Pecan Hand Made Ice Cream I am! I dropped everything, and I do mean everything, to plop myself in my comfy chair with a big ol’ mug of tea, a bar of chocolate, and my reader to indulge myself in this long-awaited joy. And it doesn’t disappoint!

OK, calm down and let the readers know what you are talking about, Leiah. Deep breaths… calm… whew. There we go.

Now. Night Shift is an anthology with stories by Nalini Singh, Ilona Andrews, Lisa Shearin and Milla Vane.

The first story, by Nalini Singh, is entitled Secrets At Midnight. To be honest, I have several of Ms. Singh’s works on my ‘to read’ stack, but other books have required my attention, leaving Ms. Singh to languish in the “Man, I really want to read that but…” stack. Now? Well, I am certainly going to have to do a bit of jiggling to move her work over to the “OK, these are things that are getting read first…” pile.

Bastien Smith is a Leopard changeling, a ‘were’ to those of the UF genre lovers club. He is a bright man, running the finances of his large, influential pack. He has been under plenty of skirts, but for the last eight months, it simply hasn’t been interesting to him. He wants more. And when he scents that special scent, he is thrilled . . . only thing is, the bloody scent keeps disappearing, leaving him walking the streets in his cat form until the early hours, searching for that amazing fragrance. When he does track it down, what he finds is more than surprising. Riley, a kindergarten teacher, owns the scent. But she is an amazing and confusing puzzle – a puzzle he is determined to solve.

What I like most about this story isn’t just Riley, though I really liked her, as well as Bastien and the other characters. What I really loved was the world building – a world unlike any other I have walked in the genre. Future technology blends seamlessly with human, changeling and psy living side-by-side in apparently easy relationships. But there also seems to be a war brewing in the background. I have got to see if this is part of a whole I have yet to discover. Oh, yeah, baby! I LOVE me some wondrous world building!

Magic Steals! Magic Steals! Magic Steals! I LOVE DALI AND JIM!

This is the one we have been waiting for, fellow lovers of Dali, the semi-blind, vegetarian white tiger. Honestly, Dali is one of my top favorite characters in the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. Dali is so much fun. She is brilliant, funny, and magical. Too bad she is also half-blind (those coke bottle lenses are a real pain, aren’t they Dali? I remember when I wore those before my Lasix surgery. Too bad magic doesn’t allow for the surgery to stick in your case!) Being the only grass-eating tiger is a real social nightmare in the carnivorous clan led by her honey-bunny, Jim Shrapshire, head of the Cat Clan and ultimate badass. She can’t even remember who or where she is for a good minute after her change – so how could she possibly be enough for Jim, strong enough to stand by his side as Alpha Female of the Clan? Besides, in her mind her skinny, flat-chested, knobby kneed self isn’t anywhere near what big, strong Alpha Jim could need in his life, right?

Well, maybe not so much! Circumstances are dire for Eyang Ida Indrayani (Grandmother Ida Indrayani in Indonesian) and Dali, with the help of Jim, is her only hope. And what Jim has always told her is more true than she could have imagined. She really IS stronger than she ever believed!

This story literally made me feel giddy!

Lucky Charms by Lisa Shearin

Confession. I am not sure I had even heard of Lisa before. I know, a lot of you are shocked. But hey, So Many Authors, So Little Time, right? Her “About” page says, in part: Lisa is the national bestselling author of The Raine Benares novels, a series of six comedic fantasy adventures. Her next series–The SPI Files–is an urban fantasy that’s been described as Stephanie Plum meets Men in Black.

Well, with descriptions like that, it was “Over To Goodreads And Put Them All On The List” time!

I have put away the Kindle for now – I really DO have to feed the four-leggeds in the house and I have knitting to do for a gift, but I will be picking my reading up again tomorrow. Who can possibly not want to dive right in when the second paragraph of the story reads:

It was four in the morning. I was in a stolen bakery delivery truck that’s been nearly totaled by three gargoyles. In the truck with me were two hungover elves, a pair of stoned leprechauns with the munchies, a naked Russian werewolf, and a hot partner, who was actually more of a bodyguard, in a race against a goblin dark mage to retrieve a leprechaun prince with a tracking chip embedded in his left ass cheek.

The trail ended at a McDonald’s in the Bronx.

Need I say more? Review of this story and The Beast of Blackmoor by Milla Vane tomorrow!

Review: Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews

gunmetalHumankind seems to have an enormous capacity for savagery, for brutality, for lack of empathy, for lack of compassion. – Annie Lennox

From her birth, Andrea Nash has had a brutal, horrific life. A Beastkin, the child of a hyena who turned into a human and a hyena were, Andrea was tortured, beaten, and brutalized beyond comprehension. Once she escaped from the horrors of her beginnings, Andrea focused – on building a life, creating the person she wished to be. In order to reach her goals, she became the best Order Agent she could possibly be. And the Order of Merciful Aid would never, ever allow a Beastkin amongst their ranks. So, Andrea hid in plain sight, wearing a medallion under her skin to hide her genetics.

When the world fell apart during the war Kate’s millennia old “lovely” auntie Erra started, Andrea made a decision which destroyed her life. She decided to stand with the Order, a group that would just as soon see her dead as a member. Thrown from the Order, and having turned her back on the Pack, and her Bouda prince lover, her life soon falls apart in every way possible.

I examined myself sitting there. I’d held back for so long. I’d been good for so long. I’d always did as expected. I followed the rules and regulations. Look where it got me. Being good hurt.

Now, Kate and Andrea have opened Cutting Edge Investigations, their own little “Order.” And when the murders of several shifters lands on Andrea’s desk, it isn’t only the job that is the problem. Oh, it couldn’t be that easy, now could it? Oh, no. Aunt B is determined to bring Andrea into the fold of the Bouda clan, whether she wants to be folded or not, and the murder victims are all employees of Rafael – yes, that Rafael. Sigh. And of course, when Rafael brings his new flame with him to Andrea’s office, all ‘seven feet of dumb’ girlfriend, well, Andrea blows a gasket. And what comes next will throw Andrea’s life into yet another turmoil which will change her life once again.

Andrea being Andrea, there is a lot of pain – but there is also a lot of humour woven through the story. As with all of the Andrew’s work the story is tightly woven, perfectly plotted and continues the storyline beautifully. I am thrilled with Andrea’s story! I waited a long time for Andrea’s story, and I couldn’t have been happier with the outcome.

Highly recommended!

Review: Magic Gifts A Kate Daniels Novella

magicgiftsKate Daniels has always been on my very short list of the best Urban Fantasy heroines today. Strong, caring, heroic. She is all the things that a strong heroine should be, and I love her for it.

In the Kate Daniels Novella, Magic Gifts, we see Kate at her best as she, Curran and Doolittle struggle to save the life of a child. A child who has been cruelly endangered by his sociopathic mother. With only a short time to save the child, our intrepid trio must do what it takes to rescue the child, even if it endangers their own lives. Pure, classic Kate.

This novella was a holiday gift from the team of Ilona Andrews to all their loyal readers, and it is a lovely gift indeed! Taking place during the action of Gunmetal Magic, Andrea’s story, it blends the happenings of Gunmetal with Magic and as usual blends seamlessly into the overall story line. And with all the action and pain, there is also the Andrews undercurrent of humour from the very first, when Andrea and Kate are trying to wrestle the body of a seventy pound flying jellyfish dripping pale pink slime through the door of Cutting Edge Investigations.

If you are a fan, don’t miss this novella. And if you haven’t been blessed with knowledge of this series, well, pick it up. It is like Cookies and Crème Ice Cream – you can’t stop with just one bite!
