Review: Omega War of the Alphas by SM Reine

24371707We pledge ourselves to liberate all our people from the continuing bondage of poverty, deprivation, suffering, gender and other discrimination. – Nelson Mandela

I stood up as best I could to their disgusting stupidity and brutality, but I did not, of course, manage to beat them at their own game. It was a fight to the bitter end, one in which I was not defending ideals or beliefs but simply my own self. – George Grosz

Criticism may not be agreeable, but it is necessary. It fulfills the same function as pain in the human body. It calls attention to an unhealthy state of things. – Winston Churchill

Twenty years ago, everyone died. Everyone. Man, woman and child, none were spared. And yet, once the Genesis Void passed, people returned – though not all. And those who did rise from their deaths returned to a world where myth and legend live, and you could very well awaken to find that you are a fairytale character. Sidhe and vampire, demon and were, all walk an Earth where humans are no longer the dominant species.

But massive change leads to mass confusion, and housing, feeding and providing care for the newly mythical brings about a razor sharp divide between the ‘Haves’ and the ‘Have Nots’ – and as Winston Churchill pointed out, “Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.” And Deirdre Tombs is miserable since she returned. For though she is purportedly a were – she heals swiftly and moves quickly – she cannot change. And since she cannot change, she isn’t trusted to live in ‘Sanctuary’ – the safe, exclusive world created for and by ‘true’ shapeshifters. Shuffled from decrepit foster home to skid row group house, she is beaten and abused, hated and feared. Now, she lives in a condemned building with her friend, an Asanbosam Vampire, and works for a Nightmare. Literally. But when ‘moon-sickness’ begins to flow through the were population, Dierdre is recruited by the very people who turned her away, who left her to the cruelties of the socialized foster system – a very broken, very vicious foster system. Of course, the system wasn’t only cruel to Dierdre – and Everton Stark is determined to make Rylie Gresham, werewolf Alpha, pay for the pain and deprivation of the many when Rylie made sure that ‘her’ wolves lived in peace and plenty.

When Rylie offers Dierdre a chance to learn what she is, which she has longed for all of her life, in return for infiltrating Stark’s group, she accepts the challenge. With Gage Cicerone, one of Rylie’s ‘children’ at her side, she takes the assignment. But now is when things get fuzzy. For the lines between good and bad, truth and lies, begin to blur . . .

Set in the world of Preternatural Affairs, the OPA holds minimal place within the story, yet looms over the scene, sure to be felt in later books in the series. PA is still my favorite of all Sara’s work, and this new series, War of the Alphas, expands the idea in a wildly creative manner. One warning – when you open this book, be sure that you do so early in the day, and have nothing else to do. The ‘smart’ side of my brain kept saying, “Go to bed, nutcase!” The obsessive part? Well, she won – I finished it at four this morning!

I received this book from Sara in exchange for a realistic review. Goooo ME!!! Sara is one of my favorite authors (and a wonderful person, btw) and she has reached another level of WOW in this new series!

Hello again! I have a new book out that I wanted to share with you. This is a paranormal romance called Forbidden Witches, which has dangerous werewolves, sexy rock stars, and…witches that happen to be forbidden. (I’m not super creative with titles. Sorry.)

This is the sequel to Caged Wolf. Like its predecessor, Forbidden Witches is only intended for adult readers due to explicit sexual content. It’s one way to keep things warm during winter, if you know what I mean and I think you do.

This book is on sale for just 99c this week – special release day price for you guys! It’ll normally be 2.99 or 3.99. I haven’t decided yet, so grab it before I make up my mind. 🙂

Ashes and Arsenic
Coming next…

I’m currently working on Cèsar’s next book, Ashes and Arsenic. I’m having a lot of fun with this one. It’s kind of a miniature Hawke family reunion – Domingo’s back in the picture, and as you can expect, he gets Cèsar into big trouble. That’s what thieving witch big brothers are for!

This will be out at the end of January, but you can already preorder it through several vendors. I’ve posted the links on my website.

By the way – I had my baby right before Halloween. He’s a healthy, happy little boy, and I’m lucky to have him! You can see a picture on my Facebook if you’re interested!

Happy holidays to my wonderful readers,

~ Sara (SM Reine)

When more than a dozen people die at a retirement home, the official story is carbon monoxide poisoning. Cèsar Hawke is convinced the reason is less mundane and more infernal. But that’s his job. As an agent working for the Office of Preternatural Affairs, he’s always looking for supernatural answers to deadly questions.

Isobel Stonecrow agrees to help him find the truth. With her powers of necrocognition, she can speak to the dead and get the real story.

But when they return to the crime scene, they find a lot more than cadavers. They find a nightmare that they can’t escape—a nightmare from Isobel’s past, which even she can’t completely remember thanks to the contract that signed away her soul.

Cèsar will have to disinter Isobel’s secrets to save her. He’ll learn who Isobel used to be, what she’s done, and the price she paid…no matter how deadly the knowledge might be.

Review: Silver Bullet by SM Reine

silverbulletPoor Cèsar. His old life was so Normal. Well, if you can call being a Witch employed by the Magical Violations Department of the Office of Preternatural Affairs ‘normal’. His day-to-day life consisted of getting warrants, performing arrests, putting the suspects on trial, and sendng guilty parties back to the Hell from whence they came – of course, with the travel forms filled out in triplicate. Hey, it was a job, right? And then, everything went to Hell. After finding a body in his bathtub in Witch Hunt, the first in the Preternatural Affairs series, Cèsar Hawke was suddenly on the run, desperate to find the real killer and clear his name. It wasn’t easy, and it definitely wasn’t fun . . . especially the whole “the Incubi now have a price on your head” part of the deal. Meh. After dealing with double dealing double agents (with really nasty tempers), vicious demons and various and sundry other nasties, a few Incubi shouldn’t be that big of a deal . . . should it?

Uh, well, maybe?

Now he is part of a special task force, made up of his old partner from Magical Violations, Agent Suzy Takeuchi, whose magical curses are only slightly less impressive than her verbal curses; Isobel Stonecrow, a necrocognaitive who raises ghosts and speaks with the dead; and Fritz Friederling, the brains and money behind the task force. A very secretive and possibly illegal task force now based in Reno Nevada, away from the LA basin and the Incubi who are intent on taking Cèsar down for spoiling a very lucrative bit of fun for them. Ah well, can’t please everyone all the time.

Following up on an infernal energy event in Reno, Cèsar meets with a confidential informant, Connie, in an abandoned building, only to have Connie commit suicide right in front of him. Who could know that a demon would be so afraid of a simple daddy longlegs? I suppose when you are a Daimarachnid, a truly horrifying spider demon under your skin suit, and you have a lot to hide, it isn’t all that surprising that that simple daddy longlegs could have been a spy for the mother of all spider demons. Well, if there really is a mother of all spider demons out there somewhere!

Oy. Can things get any worse? Oh, yeah, baby. Much. Much. Worse. Walking nightmares are bad enough, but throw in a demon overlord and various and sundry goblins and goulies and monstrosities (Oh, My!) an abandoned mine filled with spiders the size of eight-legged ponies, zombies werewolves and ethereal ruins, and you have a recipe for many a sleepless night. Oh. And let’s not forget the new price on Cèsar’s head, courtesy of his bosses boss. Can just one thing go right for Cèsar? Just one?? He will take a tiny, small little thing. Really.

Cèsar’s life just gets more and more interesting, in a very Chinese May you live in interesting times sort of way. Many of the cast from Witch Hunt make repeat appearances in this new edition, along with several new characters whom I expect to see more of in the future. And there is at least one shock that I never even saw coming, something that may change Cèsar’s life even more. I look forward to Hotter Than Helltown, the next in the series. Hope you enjoy this series as much as I am enjoying it!

I received Silver Bullet from the author in exchange for a realistic review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

It’s August – My New To-Do List Is Out. . .

It’s August, so it must be time to see what I accomplished last month, and what is up for this month.

Oh, and BTW? The formatting here is why I am moving away from WordPress.com! There doesn’t seem to be any way to bypass the MESS! So, sorry!

The Portuguese Cover

First, I am proud to say that I am working through the edit on Marcel Trigueiro‘s The Next Target. It is a challenge for both of us as we learn what each other means when it comes to Portuguese terms and how they will make the best wording in English. I am getting a real thrill out of his book, and I am sure you will as well. The edit is scheduled for completion at the end of the month, and I will post links to the purchase sites.

midnighteyesI am also scheduled for a review of Midnight Eyes by Sidney Williams for Susan Keefe at Audiobook Monthly Magazine. Excitement! Loving me some Louisiana writing, and the narrator for this book, A.C. Fellner, seems to do a good job – I will say more after I listen to the whole book. He does have an extensive catalog at Audible, so we shall see!

Hum… I spent a lot of time on editing, so that is my excuse and I am sticking with it!

My July Book Reviewing Challenge!!!

In the realm of ideas everything depends on enthusiasm… in the real world all rests on perseverance. – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

A book is a garden, an orchard, a storehouse, a party, a company by the way, a counselor, a multitude of counselors. – Henry Ward Beecher

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills!– Zoolander

I am miserably behind. On everything.  Yup. Everything.

If I received hard copies of all the work that I need to do, my office would look like this:

procrastination_7
And it makes me want to tear my hair out. Of course, it’s my own fault. Books are like Chocolate, You Can Never Get Too Much! Well. Not really.

You see, I am not really a “Procrastinator.” No, Really! I am more like . . .

shiny-new-book! So, much to my chagrin, I am way behind on reviews.

To everyone I owe reviews to:

bullBelow is a list of books I owe reviews on (in no particular order) that you will be seeing, coming soon! Of course, there will be book tours and cover reveals, but these people have been waiting a while, and for that I apologize. Elise Kavanagh is too busy liberating slaves in the City of Dis to worry about what’s happening on Earth. She hasn’t even noticed that more than three thousand people have gone missing—not until an anonymous client hires her organization, The Hunting Club, to rescue them. The man asking for help doesn’t seem to exist. But the trail of clues is too strange to ignore, and she finds herself caught in the investigation.

Werewolf Alpha Rylie Gresham is absorbed in troubles of her own. The pack is disobeying her, and the cult camped out in Northgate seems to be the source of the problem. Her mate, Abel, has resolved to fix it one way or another—even if it means going over Rylie’s head and killing their enemies.

Through secrets, lies, and assassination attempts, Elise and Rylie find that they have a new enemy in common. And what it takes to prevail might mean shattering the universe…

A Note from Sara:

Dear readers,

Many of you have been asking me how long The Ascension Series is going to run. Right now, it’s looking like it’s going to wrap up at seven books, just like The Descent Series. I’m expecting book #6 (Torn by Fury) to be ready in the summer, and the final book will be out before November.

Although this will be the end of The Ascension Series, it won’t be the end of this crazy world filled with angels, demons, werewolves, and cats named Sir Lumpy! I have a lot more planned. I think you’ll understand why as you read the final books. 🙂

Thanks for joining me on this crazy journey! Your support means the world to me!

What I am up to this weekend!

WOW! I hadn’t realized how far behind I have gotten on my R4R!

I have had proofreading jobs, which is usually not all that complicated. However, I am also doing research for an author in London, and for a screenwriter on technical issues, so I have been treading water like mad trying to keep up with everything. As I have really had to concentrate on income producing (don’t we all?!) sad to say, my R4R has fallen drastically behind! I didn’t realize how much until I started working on this new post. However, I am caught up with what I was doing, and have started R4R again. As always, paid jobs have to take a lot of my time, but I am determined to work through the bulk of my list by August 1, so, here goes!

For those authors whom I have neglected, all I can do is say I apologize for lagging behind, but eating and paying the mortgage has been tough lately, I hope you understand! I have a spreadsheet which lists the review requests, in order of receipt. Orders for publishing companies, sad to say, are required to be completed within two weeks or I lose my contracts, so those take precedence. For now, this is my schedule as I see it for the next few weeks. Ceri, you get first call!

__________________________________________________________

NOTE:  If you sent me a request and it is NOT LISTED HERE – please e-mail me right away! I changed e-mail servers, and though I tried my best to catch everything, nobody is perfect. I don’t want to leave you out.
